Kids Making Money

For me, that’s all in the past! A little over a year ago I had a wake up call about my weight. I’d been watching a TV show about obese people, and discovered that I weighed darn close to what some of these people on the show weighed. That was a very scary moment for me, and it gave me the charge I needed to start losing weight. Although I am a broke mom of very young children, I managed to find a way to join a gym and start working out two hours a day! I didn’t allow excuses to stop me because this was a goal I wanted to achieve, I was determined not to let anything get in my way! I managed to lose eighty pounds in about six months! My gym had a free child watch for the kids while their parents were working out, so we discovered this was a great benefit for the entire family! I had a small break from the children everyday where I didn’t have to worry about them because I knew they were safe and if anything were to happen the staff would notify me immediately. The children benefited from the child watch as well, I saw it as a warm up to preschool. It wasn’t structured like a class setting, but it was introducing the children to other kids and teaching them necessary social skills. I never would have discovered these things if I’d let excuses continue to hold me back!

Pooper-Scooper-in-Chief Reads His Children’s Book to Kids

December 17, 2010 1:26 PM

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports:

President Obama made a surprise visit to an elementary school today in Alexandria, Virginia to read his newly published children’s book, and the holiday classic “The Night before Christmas” to children.

But in a room with 90 second graders, naturally some more interesting moments would ensue, such as the president telling the children, sitting cross-legged on the floor of the library around him, that even he has to scoop his dog’s poop.

“Sometimes I run around with Bo at night,” Obama told the children, “although sometimes I have to scoop up his poop because I don’t just want to leave it on the lawn.”

The second graders didn’t respond too favorably to that idea.

“If you guys have a dog, you've got to walk your dog, too. And clean up after him,” the presidential pooper-scooper added.

While reading the book “The Night before Christmas” the president remarked that one of illustrations of a snow-covered house looked like Washington, DC right now, the nation’s capital now covered in light snow. And then there was the inevitable, yet toned-down from years past, dig at the DC school system’s penchant for shutting down schools even with just a little snow, that followed.

“I’m surprised you guys are in school because a lot of time in Washington people don’t go to school when there’s even an inch of snow,” Obama said with a wide smile, knowing he was skating on some thin ice. You may recall that just weeks after his inauguration Mr. Obama quipped that when it comes to weather, “folks in Washington don’t seem to be able to handle things,” joking that “We are going to have to apply some toughness to this town.”

The purpose of the visit today was to read his new book, “Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters,” to the children, published just this November.

“My girls are getting older now so they don’t always let me read to them. So I want to borrow you guys and read to you,” Obama said, “I wrote this book to my daughters.”

After reading, the president left a signed copy of his book to the library and spoke briefly about the meaning of Christmas to him – making sure you’re “not just getting something from somebody,” but that “you’re also giving back,” he said.

“One of the things about Christmas, obviously it’s presents and stockings full and spending time with your family and eating good stuff, but part of the Christmas spirit is also making sure that we are kind to each other and we are thinking about people who aren’t as lucky as we are.”

The president said that even though they are having a lot of fun during the holidays, he wants to make sure they are thinking about “how can you guys be nicer to each other and think about people who have less than you.”

Obama says there are a lot of kids out there who may not get a lot of presents because, “their parents don’t have a lot of money,” and that many people are away from their families fighting overseas right now. The elementary school is filled willed with children from military families, very near Fort Myer, a US Army Post.

“So they can’t be home for Christmas or the holidays so I hope you guys think about them too,” Obama said.

For kids, making money can be exciting. For some parents it can make them proud of their son or daughter. Kids can use their money to help pay for new toys or things that their parents may not be able to buy for them because of the rough economy. So it does help the parents out a bit as well.

You may want to ask though, How can kids go about in their money making ways exactly? Well there are a few simple answers to this question, and it each way will help them pile up quickly and simply.

1. Raking/Shoveling: When the leafs are up and going during Fall, raking can be a popular job for anybody. Neighbors are sometimes unable to rake themselves and they are willing to hire people for pay. Kids are their first choice because they really seem to cheer them up and they don't mind helping a kid out towards their goals on how to spend their money. Shoveling during Winter can also be a huge concern for the elderly. Again they will count on the kids to help out with jobs. A good thing you can get from this as well is that you have successfully done a good deed in helping someone who is not physically able to perform that certain task. It can help build your good reputation as well at a young age.

2. The Lemonade Stand: Kids love this idea. They get to hang out and sell lemonade with friends, and it is an event that can come very easy to them. An event that will definitely not bore them, and it will also keep them refreshed with their products during their hours of service. Now most of the time kids sell their lemonade for cheap, or even sell it at a donation per cup rate. Either way they do it, they do receive an immense amount of support from their customers. For example if they are selling glasses for a quarter a piece and the customer hands them a dollar and says, "keep the change", the kids eyes light up helping him think he has made a huge sale, and indeed he has. These are great for those hot summer days, when everyone is looking for a little bit of refreshment.

3. The Car Wash: What is more cute then to see a kid trying to wash a car. I mean sometimes people will pay kids not for the job they do, but just to smile at their attempts. Yet this job can still be made into a great money maker. They can charge anywhere from a couple of dollars per car, or even go based on donations again, either way they will run into a fair share of pay. Just make sure you don't decide to do this on a rainy day.

4. The Dog Wash: Kids really seem to enjoy themselves in this profession as well. Children love animals and animals, most of the time, love children right back. So it is pretty much perfect that kids take care of a dogs bodily needs. They can get your dog clean and do a good job at the same time, because dogs with cooperate with the children. Kids run into great money in this profession, and some people even will want to come back monthly or weekly for your special washes.

5. Mowing the Lawn: Yet another seasonal job, that will help build those muscles at a young age. This activity will also help them for future reference when figuring out how to mow a lawn properly. Once again this activity can help those out who can't normally do a rigorous activity like this on a weekly or monthly basis.

6. Rummage Sales Helpers: Now this is a great job for a kid to do. It will help keep them on task at all times, and it will help them learn on what it takes to follow many different types of orders during a job. You could have them organize the materials, help at the cashier station to learn more about how to deal out the right amount of change and work on their math skills. You could also have them go out and put up the signs or even assist in making the signs, nice and neatly. Whatever they do it can really help out at your rummage sale.

They are a few jobs that kids won't hardly mind. You can use them to help learn about what it takes to have a job, and some of the requirement of work really are. It will help them build their future towards getting a real, salary paying job in the future, and will help build their assortment of job skills and abilities as a worker.
